Fantastic Mediwales conference in Cardiff

Interesting group of people lots people from MED tech , pharma ,hospital etc

One really interesting talk was by the Institute of Mechanical engineer. I was fascinated to hear this group talk about healthcare. My father was a member of this body and my dad spent most of his time with pieces of metal , cutters and swarfega a really smelly cleaning gel that removes oil .

The Institute of mechanical engineers are now working with patients healthcare and the NHS

The question is what can an engineer bring to healthcare ? They created a policy and a dialogue with the health professionals . Digitisation is clearly not everything.

Technology is one of the key enabling mechanisms for the NHS- about 12000 FTE engineers work in the NHS with >30 job titles .

These engineers are being mobilised to bring in more technology and improved process

A fantastic initiative bringing more brain power to the challenge of bringing healthcare to the ageing population ……..

Life and business is a journey. It’s all about dynamic movement ,connections and the web of information.To get to what is wanted and perhaps what is needed in modern terms a goal,there is always a need for a journey . A game of snakes and ladders ,ups and downs. Certain signals from the cosmic web, the ecosystem or the market gives all the information that is needed to nudge the journey to go in another direction.But is the businesses sensors strong enough or sensitive enough to pick up these signals. With fast moving eniviroments are people even looking for these signals . These are the strategic signals often hidden often hard to read but are the key to the journey a business or person needs to take ……..

The web of connectivity . After spending a few days deep in Sweden with an awesome group of people my thoughts are on connectivity . We are all connected in a web . The internet web reflects and defines this . We all are connected all of the time . The web of connectivity ebs and flows. Ideas and ways of doing things disappearing and new ways emerging . For business , what are these new ways , what is work for . Can we bring in greater innovation into our thinking to tackle the many challenges we have in healthcare and the creation of inexpensive new medicines . Perhaps it is only the great connectivity of everything that is big enough to do this …..

Inclusive innovation cable and wireless and thought disruption

I sort of thought strangely cable and wireless was long gone . Not sure why I thought this but it seemed to have gone off my Radar long ago . So how come I ended up at the cable and wireless inclusive innovation forum I don’t really know . It was a good gig . Ideal venue , one of the hosts was a BBC news presenter and the content was interesting . From people advocating more females in business to make the world a better place and stimulate innovation , to mind experts and amazon . It feels like the big tech giants such as amazon are going to get greater and great control of markets and the way we work . Fascinating thoughts about how machine learning will take over more jobs and every type of person needs to be included .

I was inspired and interested although I kept thinking what I want is different types of thinkers and beyond anything nice people to work with . I am not sure that the phenotypes of people guarantee that .Nice one …..

Agile business communities -humans desperate to connect

So I was going to buy a new pair of shorts . Simple job , go into a shop , try them on and hand over some cash . I went into a big shop in Oxford street, flashy signs and there in the middle of the men’s section was a coffee bar . So what’s that ? I got a pair of shorts and took them over to a very helpful assistant to try and try them on . What’s your name said the assistant ? Why do you want to know that I replied. Well he said we want to really get to know you and I want to put your name on the door of the changing room !

Communities are all about people knowing each other . Depending on each other and supporting each other . Face book ,social media retail brands ,organisations are all searching for the most basic human need to be in a community ..

detachment must be the biggest challenge to the new society in front of us. Great communication has stopped the primitive activities such as sitting around a fire . The distracted mind hops from place to place preventing authentic interaction .

if we are going to make organisations really work it has to be a community ……..⊕

Scrum masters,servant leaders and the corporate shaman

Creating organisations that really work is difficult .Creating pharmaceutical R and D organisations that really work is even more difficult .

The old command and control KPI system is dead . It always relied on the top guys being very clever and the researchers just executing their commands . So we need self regulating systems . The essence of the book by Brafman and Beckstrom that organisations should set themselves up like starfish (self regulation) not spiders ( central control) .

The core position in this book that orchestrates this is a character seen in the Apache culture . The Nantan. Little is really described in the book about this character . It describes an individual who appears to lead when needed . It is the shaman of the system or as modern terminology would describe it a servant leader . The servant leader or perhaps to use an even more modern word , the scrum master ensures the system or culture is acceptant of the self regulating organisation or team . The servant leader needs a deep understanding of the politics and influence on the key figures of an organisation . Culture is key ……..

R and D strategies even more than ever determine commercial success

Wellington Partners life science day in sunny Munich 1st June . A wonderful summer day in Munich . A great meeting in the wonderfully light and modern lecture room .
Wellington certainly can invest well .

A deep knowledge of the sector and a wonderful network allows the partners at Wellington to hunt down entrepreneurs and companies where value can be created . A simple outsourcing model where the Wellington provision of capital unlocks the value of the ideas and the technology of the founders .
It looks really easy and focused activity . It so seems that the model of having a small team of investors plus a couple of analysts allows focused thinking and the creation of a wonderful story . Pharma has many people , varied people and a deep fear of simplicity . If only the pharma companies midsized and large could use a more VC like model perhaps they could utilise the total investment in healthcare R and D more effectively .Pharma has both money and real expertise . VCs have money and limited expertise . The pharma model should win out but it doesn’t . The pharma companies are scrambling for the cancer immunopharmacology targets and compounds, coming out of venture backed biotech companies .The VCs are winning .It seems the success comes from simplicity , focus , space , fewer people and great storytelling . Real skills …….
With the growing healthcare costs , volatility in the USA political arena
And pricing of drugs the R and D strategies of pharma companies will determine commercial success . Differentiated products are the name of the game. The VCs are showing the way pharma needs to follow

David Bowie,The Prism Series and Pharma

Next week June 15th a large number of Pharma and Biotech are gathering for the Prism Series. It is the launch of the a new style of community meeting where innovators and disruptors are coming together to talk about the future of Healthcare and the challenges in front of us. The theme of the meeting is cognitive diversity . How to put different types of thinkers into one room ,stir up a conversation and build an agenda for authentic discussion .David Bowie in one of his interviews said “I am not a very original thinker ,I am a synthesizer a refractor producing some sort of glob”

It is the synthesizers and refractors who look at a problem differently and speak up ,challenge or throw out new ideas who will bring the cognitive diversity needed to tackle our healthcare issues . Bringing a more authentic debate and creating a “big push ” will help science move from the labs and the techies into the wider open intuitive creatives space.

Discomfort and unbalanced . These are often feelings that arise when you do something different . An inspiration for “being on the edge ” was the great late David Bowie .His quote “I am not really great with ideas I am a synthesiser a refractor powers up the possibility of lateral and transversal thinking .Doing something different requires bravery . Somehow the “others” whoever they are want normality . The Prism series is a new one day healthcare and pharma event on June 15th at the london school of economics . The purpose of the event is to bring together the larger community to begin to discuss a new agenda for healthcare and pharma .The core principle of the event and the series is to stimulate cognitive diversity -different thinkers .The possibility that creatives and scientists sit in the same room and tackle the big questions is awesome . The line up of speakers is from tech to leadership . The hope is this “dreaming seed” starts a new movement of thinkers who can tackle the challenges facing us .
