So I was going to buy a new pair of shorts . Simple job , go into a shop , try them on and hand over some cash . I went into a big shop in Oxford street, flashy signs and there in the middle of the men’s section was a coffee bar . So what’s that ? I got a pair of shorts and took them over to a very helpful assistant to try and try them on . What’s your name said the assistant ? Why do you want to know that I replied. Well he said we want to really get to know you and I want to put your name on the door of the changing room !

Communities are all about people knowing each other . Depending on each other and supporting each other . Face book ,social media retail brands ,organisations are all searching for the most basic human need to be in a community ..

detachment must be the biggest challenge to the new society in front of us. Great communication has stopped the primitive activities such as sitting around a fire . The distracted mind hops from place to place preventing authentic interaction .

if we are going to make organisations really work it has to be a community ……..⊕

Creating organisations that really work is difficult .Creating pharmaceutical R and D organisations that really work is even more difficult .

The old command and control KPI system is dead . It always relied on the top guys being very clever and the researchers just executing their commands . So we need self regulating systems . The essence of the book by Brafman and Beckstrom that organisations should set themselves up like starfish (self regulation) not spiders ( central control) .

The core position in this book that orchestrates this is a character seen in the Apache culture . The Nantan. Little is really described in the book about this character . It describes an individual who appears to lead when needed . It is the shaman of the system or as modern terminology would describe it a servant leader . The servant leader or perhaps to use an even more modern word , the scrum master ensures the system or culture is acceptant of the self regulating organisation or team . The servant leader needs a deep understanding of the politics and influence on the key figures of an organisation . Culture is key ……..

Wellington certainly can invest well .

A deep knowledge of the sector and a wonderful network allows the partners at Wellington to hunt down entrepreneurs and companies where value can be created . A simple outsourcing model where the Wellington provision of capital unlocks the value of the ideas and the technology of the founders .
It looks really easy and focused activity . It so seems that the model of having a small team of investors plus a couple of analysts allows focused thinking and the creation of a wonderful story . Pharma has many people , varied people and a deep fear of simplicity . If only the pharma companies midsized and large could use a more VC like model perhaps they could utilise the total investment in healthcare R and D more effectively .Pharma has both money and real expertise . VCs have money and limited expertise . The pharma model should win out but it doesn’t . The pharma companies are scrambling for the cancer immunopharmacology targets and compounds, coming out of venture backed biotech companies .The VCs are winning .It seems the success comes from simplicity , focus , space , fewer people and great storytelling . Real skills …….
With the growing healthcare costs , volatility in the USA political arena
And pricing of drugs the R and D strategies of pharma companies will determine commercial success . Differentiated products are the name of the game. The VCs are showing the way pharma needs to follow

Ibiza! Sun , sand people , energy and yes that beat ! What is that beat ? Did it come from electronica ? It’s everywhere in the airport , in the taxi , in the resturants and in the clubs !

The clubs ,these massive money making machines . The combination of drugs and music is so exilerating send people in to a trance . It has long been known , almost since man began that this mixture or cocktail of these powerful ingredients can unlock human potential . The shamans have know it . Their powerful ceremonies can creat a atmosphere and effect that connects people to the higher something .

Ibiza clubs such as the zoo project do the same thing . The persistent beat getting into the brains causing a theta wave state has a powerful effect .People close down into themselves . Almost into a metaphorical ball, not looking for external stimulation such as other humans or the surrogate social media but in their brains and minds flowing ideas and thoughts . There are temporary real feelings of clarity . The chitter chatter of the monkey mind is removed and all the brain locks onto is that simple drum beat .

The zoo projects “fantasy circle “is awesome . A Hippy tribal group , dancing with such beauty .A sort of longing to be part of a sacred circle .

May be only Ibiza has all this . Unlocking the human mind is awesome but let’s leave out the uncontrolled therapeutics

[serious-slider id=”0″]Software developers always bang on about the Agile process !This process is yet to be taken up extensively by Pharma Industies R and D organisations probably because the different sectors don’t really talk to each other and the language is strange . One of the many interesting words used in the Agile system is the word ceremony . Ceremonies normal conjour up thoughts of priestly activities or special events undertaken by the local shaman . A ceremony is normal a special event which is marked by certain ritual behaviours which can be very powerful indeed

One such powerful ceremony used by the agile fans is kanban .Like the Pharma industry software developers are always trying to reduce cycle time and there is always a need for enlightenment in this area

Kanban is a very simple method using cards to control people’s workflow.

In Japanese,Kanban translates to “visual signal”.For teams using Kanban every work item is represented as a separate card on a visual board.

The main purpose of representing work as a card on the Kanban board is to allow team members to track the progress of work through its workflow in a highly visual manner . Everyone knows what everyone is doing .

The ceremony of Kanban although it does not involve using burning of sage and the use of a rattle , it’s visual effect and “marking”is effective
Like the shaman everyone “is all knowing !” which can’t be bad for business
